I chose this song because it's meaning is powerful and true. All around the world, there is world. In China, in Russia, in Iraq, in Germany, in Spain. War is everywhere. The results of war are always disasterous, either leaving many broken and hopeless or without live. There are no differences in the types of war: Civil, Nuclear, World. They are all the same in the fact that they bring death and destruction to who they fighting for and with. To those brave men and women who risk their lives in the name of their cause, they are truly noble, but war must not be the reason that those people are sent away and may come home in a coffin. In Africa, they raid villages and take children from their parents. They hand them guns and teach them how to use them. Then on the next raid, these children shoot innocent men, women, and other children. Many of them don't even make it through their first raid. And Africa isn't the only country who holds this practice.

In this song, a soldier is described as being young and old, resembling the many soldiers around the world willing or forced to fight. It speaks of the different religions that he is: a Buddhist, a Jew, and Hindu are three that are mentioned. He is described as not wanting to fight, but knows that he must and that he's been a soldier a thousand years. Then the song moves onto the countries he is fighting for: Canada, France, Japan, etc. The lyrics speak of him thinking he can stop the war. In thinking this, he knows he is fighting, always fight, because he must and because only he can decide who may live and die. Then the song describes great armies, such as Hitler's army and Caesar, and how they would not have been what they were without him. He is a tool of war, "a weapon", and without him "the war cannot go on". Finally the song ends with the description of the soldier no longer taking orders; that he is the one giving orders. The soldier is represented as soldiers everywhere, giving orders and killing for a cause. The song's meaning is that fighting with not solve war, but only make matters worse.

Sample Lyrics:
He's five feet two and he's six feet four
He fights with missiles and with spears
He's all of 31 and he's only 17
He's been a soldier for a thousand years

He's a Catholic, a Hindu, an athiest, a Jain,
a Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew
and he knows he shouldn't kill
and he knows he always will
kill you for me my friend and me for you

And he's fighting for Canada,
he's fighting for France,
he's fighting for the USA,
and he's fighting for the Russians
and he's fighting for Japan,
and he thinks we'll put an end to war this way
